Assignments to be completed from last week

  • Get PIP Packet #84 & Read Parts 1, 2, & 3
  • Join course wiki, get a Google account
  • Complete "Focusing Preliminary Research Ideas" Student Handout pg. 11.
  • Come to class next week with a partner for your Hands-On Activity, we'll sign up for slots next week.
  • Go to Milner and check out a "lab book" for middle or high school science. Flip through them be ready to discuss your general observations regarding the labs.

  • Hands-On Activity: Teaching Partners: Turn in names, and whether you want an early or late presentation time

Inquiry Activity: Living or Non-Living...That is the Question!

  • Pre-lab: characteristics of life...

  • Debrief:
    • What value does this lab provide for hs students? When would this lab be most beneficial for students?
    • How might the lab be improved?
    • What did you notice about how the instructor organized the lab?
    • How might you set up the lab if there are classes in between?
    • What safety issues are there with this lab?

2) What kind of work was expected before & after the lab? Meaningful?
3) How much did you learn from doing labs?
4) How will these experiences influence the types of labs you use in your classroom?

Look at the lab textbooks you brought to class:
  • Using the inquiry grid, what types of labs are primarily found in this lab book?
  • Pick a single lab to critique
  • Determine both good and bad qualities along with ways the lab could be improved.
  • Pair up with someone and compare/share your findings.
